In 2020 the program was put on hiatus, and returned in 2021 with a new twist, skateboards! Students receive skateboard kits to decorate and build their own skateboards and learn the basics of skateboarding. With volunteers from General Motors, The Dobrusin Law Firm, and People Skate & Snowboard., the reenvisioned Phoenix Races were a success. Scholarships are available every program year for participating students.

The Phoenix Derby Races began in 2018 when our board saw a need to introduce STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics) to Pontiac Students in a unique way. The Derby Races were born.
Students from Pontiac School District (Middle & High Schools), are mentored by volunteers from General Motors, The Dobrusin Law Firm, and local engineers and mechanics in building their own derby race cars. Students and teams were provided with the tools, training, and skills to create, build, and engineer their own derby cars and race them. Opportunities for $1,000 scholarships are available every year.
